Spoiler alert: a refurbished Samsung phone like the S9 is still good value for the money. Here's why.
Let’s get right to the point: buying a Samsung S9 is still well worth the money.
It’s true that the S9 is starting to fall behind the newest Android flagships in areas like battery life, low-light photography, and speed. However, the S9 is a great phone to use nonetheless, and it still feels premium. Plus, with the price of a refurbished S9 now hovering around £149, it’s a purchase that will give you amazing performance relative to what you’re spending.
The Samsung S9 Plus has an additional camera lens, larger display, and a higher capacity battery. It also has slightly more powerful internals. The main question comes down to whether you want a bigger or smaller phone though, and that’s really a matter of preference.
Thanks to its Snapdragon 845 chip, the S9 should still feel snappy for another couple of years. And even though this phone is not receiving any more major Android OS updates, you can still expect Samsung to release security patches that will keep this phone safe to use.
Probably because you’re using it too much! Just kidding. After a couple years of daily charging, you will notice your battery’s health starts to suffer. However, your local repair shop can easily fix this problem for pretty cheap.
Some S9 users report issues with app power management (invisible tasks running in the background of the device; eating up battery) but these can usually be rectified with a factory reset (despite the name, this can be performed at home).
The Samsung S10 is a total overhaul of the S9, and it feels like a completely new phone (because it is). The S10 has more battery power, more RAM, improved cameras, and a better screen. The bezel-less display and design overall makes the phone look more premium and modern too.
If you have the extra money to spend, a refurbished S10 would probably be the better choice. However, there’s no shame in getting an older model without all the bells and whistles. Most people might not even appreciate all the slight improvements.
Many people complained that the S9 wasn’t a big enough improvement over the S8. We do agree, the S9 feels a lot like the S8. However, it does include better biometrics (face unlock, a better positioned fingerprint reader) and improved low-light camera performance. Since the two are pretty close in price now, there are a few cases where the S8 would be preferable to the S9.
As mentioned, with the price of an S9 now being under £130 on the refurbished market, it surely is still a good buy. Since this phone was Samsung’s flagship release in 2018 (together with the S9 Plus and Note 9) you can expect fast internals that will make the phone stay speedy for a few years to come.
And the best part is, you don't even have to wait until Black Friday 2023 to get a cheap deal on the S9! Find the best Black Friday Samsung Deals right here on Back Market! You can save on this particular Friday or also on every other day of the week or year.
