Tech only runs smoothly when every part plays well together. From processors and memory to storage and power, here’s what ‘compatible parts’ really mean, and why understanding them helps you shop with confidence.

It’s 2025 folks – we can’t keep assuming that picking up a new device from a manufacturer, is the only way to get good quality tech. Are you nervous about buying refurbished tech for the first time? Pfft, don’t be. It’s part of Back Market’s promise to put safety and performance first. Here we’ll debunk what compatible parts are, why they’re important in the refurbishment process, and how Back Market makes sure your device quality is top-notch.

What are compatible parts?

Compatible parts are non-OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts that function identically or similarly to the original ones. These are components of a device made by manufacturers other than the original brand (Apple or Samsung for example), but designed to work the same way. Essentially high quality replacements that fit and function just like the original part.

Where are compatible parts sourced?

Sellers on Back Market source compatible parts from trusted, vetted suppliers and certified manufacturers. For us, quality control in this area is essential. On top of relying on trusted sellers to source parts of good quality, we also run independent checks to make sure every part, whether original or compatible, meets our quality charter requirements.

OEM vs compatible parts: What are the differences between third-party, OEM-equivalent, and refurbished OEM parts?

Here’s a breakdown of the types of compatible parts you might find in a refurbished device:

  • Third-party parts: These are components that are produced by a third-party manufacturer but designed to perform the same function. Specifications on parts of this type may vary, but Back Market only accepts  those that pass strict testing.

  • OEM-equivalent parts: These are components that are produced by a third-party manufacturer too, but built to the same specifications as ones produced by an OEM. These parts are basically “clones” of OEM parts, with identical performance.

  • Refurbished OEM parts: These are original manufacturer parts that have been taken from another device, tested, and refurbished prior to use in a device.

Are compatible parts safe to use?

When properly tested, compatible parts are completely safe for use. Sellers on Back Market and refurbishment experts within our Innovation Lab conduct safety tests to ensure they meet our rigorous standards.

Why do refurbishers use compatible parts?

Refurbishers use compatible parts for a couple of reasons. One is that it allows them to lower the cost of refurbished devices and give customers like you a better deal while delivering the same performance as a new battery.

Another reason is availability. Compatible parts can be easier to source than OEM ones.

Will my devices still work?

Trust us, your device will work. With Apple devices, you may encounter some notifications in the settings that will inform you that compatible parts were used. But that does not impact performance or quality.

Remember, all devices sold on Back Market have to meet our high standards. If a compatible part doesn’t meet performance standards, it will not make it past our testing procedures and won’t be used in a Back Market device.

What do refurbishers and the Back Market Innovation lab check for?

Refurbishers who sell on our platform test each part of a device during the repair process. They look at battery capacity (to make sure it’s above 85% in the EU and 80% in Japan, UK and U.S), screen brightness, sensitivity, and more. Then there’s the Back Market end. Our internal Innovation Lab runs independent spot checks on stock coming into our platform. We stress-test parts to confirm they meet strict safety, durability, and performance requirements.

Are compatible parts as good as manufacturer parts?

Depending on the device, some original parts might no longer be in production, making high-quality alternatives the best option.

In most cases, you won't notice a difference.

Anything else to flag?

Compatible parts aren’t a compromise. They’re part of what makes refurbished tech reliable, affordable, and sustainable. Plus, every device comes with a 1-year warranty, 30-day returns, and customer care support around the clock, when you need it..
