How Apple’s new CEO can fix repairability

According to iFixit, Apple scores poorly on repairability. We asked five experts whether new CEO John Ternus can turn things around, and what it means for your devices.

It’s not every day that one of the world’s most powerful tech companies gets a new CEO – but for Apple, that day has come. In April 2026, Apple announced that Tim Cook would be stepping down after 15 years as CEO, and on September 1 senior vice president of hardware engineering John Ternus (pictured with Cook above) took the lead. 

Ternus takes over at an interesting time for Apple. Commentators have suggested that the Cupertino-based tech titan is lagging in the AI race against Google and others. Others wonder when the long-rumoured folding iPhone will arrive to revitalise the brand’s hardware lineup. 

Most importantly, independent ratings from organisations like iFixit and US PIRG suggest that Apple is falling behind when it comes to repairability across its product portfolio, citing issues like use of adhesives, non-removable components, and points of entry placed behind screens. 

Through the 2010s, Apple faced investigation and legal action over accusations of planned obsolescence – that’s the practice of designing products with a time-limited lifespan, without fully informing the end user. The company introduced its Self Service Repair program in 2022, giving users the chance to rent or buy genuine Apple tools and parts, but teardowns of recent Apple products suggest that repairability has fallen to the wayside once again. 

Critics believe the new Apple CEO must make iPhones more repairable

As Wired reports, US Public Interest Research Group gave the latest iPhone 17 series a D- in repairability, behind both Samsung and Google, taking into account EU-standard repairability ratings and citing restrictions on use of aftermarket parts. Furthermore, the latest iPads and MacBooks score poorly in iFixit’s repairability ratings due to access points sitting behind fragile glass screens, unibody designs, and heavy use of adhesives. 

All of this makes it much easier to get rid and replace than to attempt fixing an Apple device yourself. A qualified mechanical engineer, John Ternus joined Apple in 2001 as part of the product design team and in his 25 years with the company, he has worked on creating the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AirPods product lines. Just before Ternus stepped up as CEO, Back Market spoke to five experts ranging from tech YouTubers to sustainability campaigners to Silicon Valley CEOs, to ask whether Ternus might turn Apple’s approach to repairability around and actually embrace refurbished tech more concretely. Their answers have been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.

Why is Apple scoring so poorly for repairability on iFixit?

Apple has worked hard to improve ingress protection, to make their devices more waterproof, more dustproof. I think they have pursued that version of longevity at the expense of repairability.

For example, to repair an iPad, you have to go through a display panel – there’s no other way to get in. That panel is a huge, thin, fragile piece of glass, and there’s adhesive all the way around it. In laptops, glued-down batteries have been a serious challenge. The battery cells are wide, and it can be tricky to get it all out cleanly.

Are you expecting to see any improvement in repairability under John Ternus?

He hasn’t been repairability’s biggest champion publicly. In public statements, he’s pushed back against the idea that parts pairing is a problem - this is the serialization of parts and Apple’s historic blocking of the completion of repairs that didn’t go through an official Apple process.

However, under John Ternus’ hardware leadership, Apple released Repair Assistant, a software tool that lets you complete repairs, basically ending the problems of parts pairing. That’s what excites me about Ternus coming on as leader from a repairability perspective – our biggest champions inside major manufacturers have been engineers. They see the benefits of repairability in a logical way.

What’s your view on Apple’s approach to repairability?

In general, most manufacturers are still talking about a fake contradiction between repairability and longevity. What we believe is that to make products last longer, they should be repairable, for example, offering removable batteries.

I have to say that on that specific aspect, the latest iPhones are easier in the sense that they’re able to separate the battery using electrical power on the glue, so that’s one specific thing. But we still have a lot of issues with parts pairing and software locks, hindering people from repairing their products.

What do you hope John Ternus can do for Apple’s product repairability?

What we would hope to see as a coalition is that Apple gets inspired to create a design that is actually long-lasting, but make them repairable, to really think of some innovation. We see innovation each year around things like camera resolution, but at some point, this doesn’t change much. Imagine if we could see modular phones that are truly repairable? That’s something I’d love to see. But right now, I don’t see them talking about repairability enough. If you ask me for my hopes, I want to be positive, but I’m not seeing it now.

What are your impressions of the state of repairability across the Apple product portfolio?

I just did a video where we tore apart every MacBook Neo, which has been lauded for being repairable, and exchanged the parts to make different colored versions. One of the obvious things was that it’s quite tedious, and I had issues using the Apple Self-Service Repair store. Still, I do think Apple should get some credit for making really good quality hardware; I really haven’t had any failures. 

How about John Ternus, do you think he’ll improve things?

I don’t know too much about John Ternus because he hasn’t had a huge presence in the company. I’ll be honest, I don’t think he’s going to be all that different. I wouldn’t be looking to John Ternus to change the state of repairability. 

However, he might be better at finding clever ways to build computers – Tim Cook wouldn’t have looked at the hardware and said ‘why don’t you try this?’, he just would’ve said ‘is it cheap to build?’

Does Apple want to be seen promoting repairability?

To me, it’s never been this obvious priority. If it was, they’d be hewing about it in their presentations [...] I don’t think Apple’s really ever cared about it, it’s never been important to them.

What shifts in industrial design have affected repairability?

In the old days, electronics used to be quite thick and large, and you could hold components with your finger. You could solder and apply heat and mount and replace and repair. Consumer electronics have shifted from hand assembly to robotic assembly. At the production level, it’s not compatible with proper repairability.

What could John Ternus introduce to Apple’s product lineup to help with these issues?

One of my students is working on a process for device repair that preserves aesthetics, so that repaired devices can be cool and repairable at the same time. But to apply this to Apple is such a difficult task. [Ternus] probably can’t disrupt the range too much, but Apple could design one mobile phone or laptop and open a new range of repairable products. That’s absolutely doable.

What are some of the considerations that go into producing a repairable electronic product at scale?

People want to hold onto the product they have. For us as a company, we have to figure out how to enable that desire in the customer. 

I think the assumption is that designing for repairability must be challenging, because otherwise, why wouldn’t every product be repairable? If you go and talk to engineers, what you’ll find is that they know how to design for repairability, but if it’s not a priority for the business, it falls to the wayside, and you might see engineers optimise against repairability in favor of other things. 

Why do you think Apple doesn’t produce repairable products? 

It comes back to an industrial design philosophy that was centred around seamlessness. Things that enable longevity, repairability, and open access to the product were strictly locked down in favor of Apple’s walled garden. I think for a period of time that resonated with consumers, because we were coming out of a period of complexity in electronics, and there’s a certain appeal to simplicity. 

Then, over the course of the last 10 or 15 years, it became apparent that the walled garden has downsides, and the unfortunate impact of generating more waste and limiting longevity of access to devices. The dead-end philosophy that Apple took on might’ve had its moment, but is increasingly irrelevant to what consumers want. 

Will John Ternus be the one to change Apple’s approach to repairability, or are other factors more persuasive?  I think the driving force will be demand from either regulators or consumers for repairability, such that it becomes a requirement from a regulatory perspective or a strong enough deciding factor from the end customer. To a large extent, it comes down to their business model being so software and services-centric that it’s easier to just comply with regulations than do the bare minimum.
