Design
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 features the same robust design as the previous model. The Samsung Armor aluminium frame is advertised as having enhanced drop and scratch resistance, and the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 front and back (folded) hold up to that promise as well. It’s worth noting that the internal Infinity Flex screen is coated with two layers of plastic, adding durability.
At 154.9 x 67.1 mm folded and 13.4 mm thick, the phone is fairly large, due to its doubled up nature. At the same time, it weighs in at 238g, roughly the same weight as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (which is decent enough for a phone of its size) and 30 to 70 g more than the S23+ and the S23. Expect it to fill out your pockets a little more than most phones–the cost, of course, of an incredible 7.6” screen diagonal and 130.1 mm width when unfolded.
The folding screen is, of course, the main attraction of the entire Z series, and on the Z Fold 5, it is a marvel. Made with high-tech laminates and Gorilla Glass Victus glass, Samsung’s “Infinity Flex” display is no longer the delicate thing the original Galaxy Z Fold was released with. Samsung claims the Infinity Flex display can be unfolded and folded thousands of times, giving it the durability to last the typical life of a modern smartphone.
The ability to unfold your smartphone into a small tablet is pretty satisfying. Take your current smartphone and turn it horizontal. Then imagine another one placed above it. That’s the experience of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 (more or less). You can watch videos and play games in larger format, get a better view of your photos, and make use of expanded screen real estate. And when you’re finished, you can fold it up for easy carrying.
On top of this, the phone is rated IPX8 for water resistance, which means it can withstand immersion in up to 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes without problem. Not that we encourage testing this.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 comes in five different colours: Cream, Ice Blue, Phantom Black, Grey, and Blue.
