Supercharge your workouts with these fitness gadgets

Updated on 9 July 2024

DJ Simz, Ewan Heritage, Kat Penelope, and Joash Anderson tell us their fitness tips for the best ways to get moving.

What if we told you workouts could be fun? Honestly, hear us out. You might have spent most of the last season taking it a little slow. You haven’t worked out in a while, and you can’t run that mile like you used to. But it’s that time of the year when you’re ready to start moving more: the days are getting longer, the vibes a little more upbeat, and you’re spending more time outside.

We’re in the business of tech, so believe that your smartphone is good for more than endless scrolling. To that point, we sat down with 4 experts: Ewan Heritage, a qualified UKA Running coach, DJ Simz, a London-based DJ, Kat Penelope, a self-confessed gymgirl, and Joash Anderson, an emerging London photographer to give you tips on sliding out of hibernation mode and putting foot to pavement. Read on to hear about the best fitness gadgets to help you get moving.

The best headphones and speakers for your workout

DJ Simz

DJ Simz’ tips for how to ease into working out include picking a good playlist and the right gear for crisp listening. She uses refurbished headphones to produce up-tempo running tracks, and listens to curated mixes to keep the energy high. “My workout mix is a mixture of popular dancehall songs,” she says. “I love the genre of music myself. It’s perfect for a workout as the songs are upbeat and lively to keep you going.”

Here are some headphones and speakers that’ll get your gym session going:

Jabra Elite Active 75T

The Jabra models have some nifty features suited to exercise. This one has on-ear touch controls that let you play around with volume and change song hands-free, meaning you don’t have to pause your workout.

Beats By Dre Beats Fit Pro

Beats are known for their sound quality, but they’re actually well suited for heavy movement, too. The Beats Fit Pro earbuds are well-shaped for staying locked in your ears, so they won’t slip out if you’re running or doing other heavy sports activity.

Ultimate Ears Boom 3 Bluetooth Speakers

If you’re into group fitness or moving with friends, it’s best to get something that’ll give you surround sound. These speakers can fill a workout studio easily with deep, crisp bass, and are conveniently portable if you need them on the go.

How fitness gadgets can improve your run

Ewan Heritage

If you’re a runner like Ewan, a smartwatch can be great for making sure you’re hitting your fitness goals when on the move. "The best tip I have for beginner runners is to never worry about other people,” he says. “You’re on your own journey; just focus on your running, and enjoy it!"

Read on for some fitness gadgets that’ll get you from couch to marathon in no time:

Apple Watch Ultra 2

The Apple Watch makes hitting your 10k into a little bit of a game. Once you start that streak of closing your Move Rings, it’s hard to stop (trust us, we’ve tried). This device also has a bunch of great health measurements, including tracking heart rate, blood oxygen, and sleep cycle, too.

Fitbit Smart Watch Versa HR GPS

One for the fitness aficionado in your life. It’s a household name for people who like to move – the Fitbit can track your steps, floors climbed, and calories burnt pretty accurately. You can also connect it to GPS for uber-accurate tracking, and customize the straps for added flair.

Smart Watch Xplora X6 Play

Movement is not just for adults, of course. Here’s a smartwatch for the little ones that has most of the benefits of their advanced competitors – tracks steps, distance, and so on – and it’s also waterproof, so perfect for any spills.

The best cameras to track your progress

Joash Anderson

If you’re barely hitting your 5k right now, progress pictures and images can be a good way to track your progress over time. “I used a lot of old sports photography as a reference for my pictures,” says Joash, who captured the London Marathon using his refurbished camera. “I really wanted to try out some new sports photography styles; with the London Marathon coming up, it was the perfect opportunity!”

Here are 3 cameras perfect for those before-and-afters:

Canon EOS 1200D Reflex 18

With this camera, you get a lot at a good price point. Its software boosts sensitivity to light all on its own, so is useful for snapping those progress pics in a range of lighting.

Nikon D5100 Reflex 16.2

This one’s 16.2 megapixels, which is pretty neat. We recommend using the video setting on this one for putting together snippets of your fitness journey over time.

GoPro Hero 7 Sport Camera

Something to pick up that’s ideal for fitness (like, it even has sport in the title). This action camera has top-notch stabilisation qualities that’s as good for capturing your marathon POV as it is a selfie video.

Fitness tech for checking your form

Kat Penelope

“If you’re wanting to start filming your workouts there are a few things to keep in mind,” Kat says. She uses her phone to record her form at the gym, which is a good way to make sure you’re doing your movements properly and avoiding injuries. “Make sure you don’t get strangers in the background without their permission, and check your frame before you start to make sure you’re not going to move out of it.”

Read on for our 3 tech recommendations to make sure you’re in proper form:

iPhone 14

The Trusty iPhone is ideal for picture and video content. It’s pretty easy to use for even the biggest tech novices, with a built-in self-timer great for taking pics and vids.

Google Pixel 7 Pro

This phone’s camera is known for being advanced in its image quality, with crisp autofocus and zoom to capture your gym moves at a number of angles.

Panasonic DMW-SHGR1E Tripod Grip

This Panasonic Tripod is the kind of thing you’ll need to go hands-free with your form check setup. Pretty essential when you’re busy on the machines… or for starting that gymfluencer TikTok account you’ve secretly been thinking about.
